St. Andrew's new grand piano is cause for musical celebration

CORAL SPRINGS | St. Andrew Church is celebrating the addition of a refurbished grand piano by hosting a concert Friday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m., with a reception to follow in the parish hall.

The concert, sponsored by the St. Andrew Music Ministry, will feature the Scherzo Trio, a classical music trio of oboe, cello and piano. This unique trio is a twist on the traditional string trio, replacing the violin with the haunting sound of the oboe. The group will present a diverse program of virtuosic classical works, opera, ragtime, musicals, tango and cinematic music, appealing to audiences of all ages.

The musicians are:

  • oboist Erin Gittelsohn, currently the principal oboe for the Miami City Ballet and the instructor of young musicians in South Florida, many of whom have won state awards;
  • cellist Elizabeth Haverman Aron, who has performed at Carnegie Hall and accompanied artists such as Yo Yo Ma;
  • and pianist Sheng-Yuan Kuan, a graduate of the Yale School of Music and the Manhattan School of Music who was a featured artist at the Heifetz International Music Institute. Kuan won the best female pianist award at the Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna in 2009.

Mary Lou Taff, St. Andrew's music director, said she invited the musicians to perform at the church, at 9950 N.W. 29 St., Coral Springs, to bring the community together for the celebration.

Tickets are $10 at the door and include the reception. For more information call the church office at 954-752-3950.
