Schott Communities celebrates ‘30 years and counting’

Special needs clients star in fundraising fashion show on 30th anniversary

WESTON | Schott Communities celebrated for a double reason this month: Its special needs clients starred in its annual Models of Inspiration Fashion Show and Luncheon, and the center for the deaf and disabled marked 30 years of existence.

“There was lots of cheering for the clients and not a dry eye in the house,” said Jerry Cohen, director of Annual Funds and Stewardship for Schott Communities. “This inspiring event celebrated the determination and positive outlook on life of the Schott Communities special needs clients.”

The sold-out event drew 200 guests to the Weston Hills Country Club and raised much-needed funds for Schott Communities’ mission. The show featured 41 models wearing spring fashions provided by Dillard’s of Pembroke Pines. ASM Beauty World Academy provided complimentary make-up application and hair styling for the models.

Schott Communities was founded in 1986. Its programs assist participants in developing skills for independent living, promote self-sufficiency, and provide social, recreational and spiritual opportunities that enhance their quality and enjoyment of life.

Schott offers art classes for disabled adults; socials for the blind, deaf or disabled; Sign Language classes; counseling services; and Welcome to My World, a sensitivity training program. The community also has two residences on the grounds: a group home and apartments for the deaf or disabled.

Mass for the deaf, blind and disabled is celebrated every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. in St. Jude Chapel, located at 6591 S. Flamingo Road, Cooper City, on the grounds of Schott Communities. Schott also offers religious education for children with special needs, including autism.

“Our community is experiencing a renaissance like never before,” said Cohen. “We have new programs and a renovated facility that is ready to welcome those who seek its services. It is with a sense of gratitude and joy that we celebrate the vision of our founders, now a reality for 30 years and counting.”
