CORAL GABLES | The Cuban Association of the Order of Malta recently paid tribute to Fernando Garcia-Chacon, who just completed his term as president of the association. Garcia-Chacon has also been elected president emeritus of the association in recognition of his outstanding work as a member for the past 40 years.
The Cuban association was founded in 1952 and reorganized in Miami in 1990. In addition to its activities in support of the poor and sick of the Archdiocese of Miami, notably the St. John Bosco Clinic, the association has been working with the Catholic Church in Cuba since 1996. It currently sponsors 60 centers for the elderly along with supporting facilities for retired priests, hospitals and other institutions, including one that serves children affected with Down syndrome.
The dinner in honor of Garcia-Chacon took place at the Riviera Country Club. Among those present were Ambassadors Mauro Bertero Gutierrez, a member of the Governing Council of the Order of Malta, and Jacques de Mandat Grancei, representing the Grand Magisterium of the Order of Malta in Rome.
Archbishop Thomas Wenski also was present, as he is the head chaplain of the Cuban association.
