FORT LAUDERDALE | At a restaurant aptly named for its proximity to Fort Lauderdale International Airport, Miami Archbishop Thomas Wenski recently affirmed the role of Broward County area donors and benefactors.

About 100 guests attended a March 15 luncheon with the archbishop, held for the third year at Anthony’s Runway 84 Restaurant as part of the Broward outreach during the 2015 Archbishop’s Charities Drive (ABCD). Following the cocktail hour, a sit-down luncheon was served and a short program commenced.

“This is a way for the people in Broward to know that I am their bishop too, because sometimes people think there is a magical line on County Line Road,” the archbishop said, noting that he also spoke at a Mass of Thanksgiving in November at St. Clement Parish in Wilton Manors.

ABCD is a call to action throughout the Archdiocese of Miami’s three counties: Broward, Dade and Monroe. Donations from the drive support many programs within the archdiocese, including parish ministries, financial assistance, youth outreach, the seminary, and the ministry of the archbishop and bishops.

“I want people in Broward County to know that you are part of the Archdiocese of Miami,” the archbishop said. "With your support, we have done great things here in the archdiocese."

He noted that the archdiocesan annual financial report was recently published in The Florida Catholic and available by e-mail as well. He urged people to review it.

Archbishop Wenski joked that he enjoyed being with his luncheon guests even though it meant giving up a Sunday afternoon ride on his motorcycle.

"We are all one community and I do try to be present up here in Broward," he said.

He added: “It is good news of the archdiocese making progress, and we are in a good position financially. But it is not about the finances; it is about the mission. Of course we need finances to fulfill our mission, but it is our mission that drives us.

“I thank you for the support of our church and of our mission,” the archbishop said.
