Archbishop Thomas Wenski celebrates a trilingual Mass in honor of the feast of the Immaculate Conception at Immaculate Conception Church in Hialeah.
Nos estamos preparando para la Navidad - el nacimiento de Jesús – quien entra en un mundo perdido para salvarlo y conducirlo de nuevo a Dios. Durante el Adviento se nos anima a enderezar el camino del Señor, haciendo penitencia, pues sólo cuando reconocemos nuestro pecado y nuestra necesidad de Dios es que la Navidad puede tener sentido. De lo contrario, habría que olvidar que Jesús es la razón de la estación.
Con la fiesta de hoy de la Inmaculada Concepción de María afirmamos nuestra creencia de que por un privilegio único, porque ella iba a ser la Madre de Dios hecho hombre, María fue preservada de toda mancha de pecado desde el primer momento de su vida. Así como nos preparamos para la Navidad, Dios mismo estaba preparando el día de Navidad de una manera maravillosa e impresionante.
We are preparing for Christmas – the birth of Jesus – who comes into a lost world to save it and bring it back to God. During Advent we are encouraged to make straight the way of the Lord by doing penance, for it is only when we acknowledge our sinfulness and our need of God that Christmas can make sense. Otherwise we would forget that Jesus is the reason for the season.
With today’s feast of Mary’s Immaculate Conception, we affirm our belief that by a unique privilege, because she was to be the Mother of God become man, Mary was preserved from all trace of sin from the very first moment of her life. Just as we prepare for Christmas, God himself was preparing for Christmas Day in a very wonderful and awesome way.
The first reading tells us the story of Adam. When God created Adam, he made his preparations beforehand. He made a paradise ready for him to live in. Adam lost paradise for his sin but God didn’t give up on us. He promised a redeemer, a new Adam who would come to restore mankind to friendship with himself once again. Well, just as he prepared a paradise for the first Adam to live in, when the time came for the new Adam to come into the world, God once again had to make some preparations. He fashioned a paradise for the second Adam to dwell in, and that paradise was the body and soul of our Blessed Mother, immune from the taint of sin which was the legacy of Adam’s curse. And if the first Eve was made from a rib taken from the side of the first Adam, the second Adam, Jesus, took flesh in the virginal womb of Mary, who is for us like a new Eve.
If the world without God seems like a barren wasteland caught in the throes of a seemingly never ending winter, in Mary – she who is full of grace – we see God’s spring breaking through the frozen ground of mankind’s indifference and hardness of heart.
La primera lectura nos habla de Adán. Cuando Dios creó a Adán, hizo sus preparativos de antemano. Hizo un paraíso listo para él donde vivir. Adán perdió el paraíso por su pecado, pero Dios no se dio por vencido por eso. Él prometió un redentor, un nuevo Adán que vendría a restaurar la amistad de la humanidad con él una vez más. Así como se preparó un paraíso para el primer Adán donde vivir, cuando llegó el momento para que el nuevo Adán entrara en el mundo, Dios una vez más tuvo que hacer algunos preparativos. Se formó un paraíso donde el segundo Adán habitara, y ese paraíso era el cuerpo y el alma de nuestra Santa Madre, inmune a la corrupción del pecado, que fue el legado de la maldición de Adán. Y si la primera Eva fue hecha de una costilla tomada del lado del primer Adán, el segundo Adán, Jesús, se encarnó en el seno virginal de María. Así, ella es para nosotros como una nueva Eva.
Si el mundo sin Dios parece una tierra estéril atrapada en medio de un invierno que parece no tener fin, en María - la que está llena de gracia – llega la primavera de Dios que quebranta el suelo congelado de la indiferencia y la dureza de corazón de los hombres..
La virgen sin pecado es como un brote que se abrió en una rama, el Israel del Antiguo Testamento que parecía estar muerto. Ese brote a su vez producirá una flor, el niño que nacerá en Belén.
The sinless virgin is like a bud that burst forth into life on a branch, the Israel of the Old Testament that appears to be dead. That bud will eventually produce a flower, the Child who will be born in Bethlehem.
The Immaculate Conception of Mary is God’s answer to our hopelessness because she will become in time the Mother of the true Hope of the World. She says yes to God – and in that yes, hope is reborn and the promise given by God to Adam and his children is fulfilled.
Her “yes” helps reverse the “no” of Adam and Eve – in this way, Mary shares in a special way in the work of Jesus who comes into the world so that we, too, like Mary might learn to say “yes” to God. For that is the way of true freedom, our true happiness. Adam and Eve thought that freedom and happiness could be found without God and they said no to him.
La Inmaculada Concepción de María es la respuesta de Dios a nuestra falta de esperanza, porque ella será la Madre de la Esperanza verdadera del mundo. Ella dice que sí a Dios - y en ese sí, renace la esperanza, y la promesa dada por Dios a Adán y a sus hijos se cumple.
Su "sí" substituye el "no" de Adán y Eva - de esta manera, María participa de una manera especial en la obra de Jesús, que viene al mundo para que también nosotros, como María, podamos aprender a decir "sí" a Dios. Por que ese es el camino de la verdadera libertad, y nuestra verdadera felicidad. Adán y Eva pensaron que la libertad y la felicidad se podían encontrar sin Dios y por eso le dijeron que no a él.
Hoy, en esta fiesta de la esperanza, también celebramos el 45 aniversario de la conclusión del Concilio Vaticano II. Al convocar el Concilio, el Beato Juan XXIII trató de lograr una renovación de la Iglesia para que fuera más eficaz en presentar a Jesús como la esperanza del mundo, pues por el, el camino, la vida y la verdad, los que Dios hizo a su imagen y semejanza pueden encontrar la libertad y la felicidad.
El Papa Juan Pablo II, asistido por el entonces Cardenal Ratzinger, ahora Papa Benedicto XVI, dedicó su pontificado a la aplicación auténtica del Concilio para lograr así una nueva primavera de fe para el mundo. Podemos ser heraldos de esa primavera en la medida en que vivimos nuestras vidas como una respuesta a la llamada universal a la santidad. Vivir en este mundo con todos sus problemas y dificultades todavía puede ser una experiencia hermosa, si vivimos en el mundo con Dios y para Dios.
Today, on this feast of hope, we also celebrate the 45th anniversary of the conclusion of the Second Vatican Council. On this date 45 years ago, Pope Paul VI brought the council to a successful conclusion. In convoking the Council, Blessed John XXIII sought to bring about a renewal of the Church so that she would more effectively present Jesus as the Hope of the World– because through his Way, his Life, his Truth we can find the freedom and happiness for which God made each one of us in his own image and likeness.
Pope John Paul II, assisted by the then Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, devoted his pontificate to the authentic implementation of the Council for he believed that the Council would help bring about a new springtime of faith to the world. We can be heralds of this springtime in the measure we live our lives in response to the universal call to holiness– for living in this world with all its problems and difficulties can still be a beautiful experience if we live in the world with God and for God.
Today’s feast of the Immaculate Conception reminds us that long before we began our Christmas preparations, God began his – by choosing Mary from the first moment of her conception for a singular mission in the history of our salvation. To bring us Jesus was the only reason for anything Mary did. Jesus should be the reason for everything that we do as Christians: he is our Peace, our Joy, our hope, our Savior, our Life.
La fiesta de hoy de la Inmaculada Concepción nos recuerda que mucho antes de nuestros preparativos de Navidad, Dios comenzó los suyos - por haber elegido a María desde el primer instante de su concepción para una misión singular en la historia de nuestra salvación.
Llevarnos a Jesús fue el único motivo para todo lo que hizo María. Y Jesús debe ser para nosotros el motivo de todo lo que hacemos como cristianos: él es nuestra paz, nuestra alegría, nuestra esperanza, nuestro Salvador, nuestra vida.

The sinless virgin is like a bud that burst forth into life on a branch, the Israel of the Old Testament that appears to be dead. That bud will eventually produce a flower, the Child who will be born in Bethlehem.
