LIGHTHOUSE POINT | St. Paul the Apostle Parish hosted an ecumenical worship service Jan. 23 to mark the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.

St. Paul's pastor, Msgr. William Dever, and Deacon Greg McLauhglin took part, along with Rev. Charles Walthall and Rev. Mark Andrew Jones from St. Nicholas Episcopal Church in Pompano Beach; Rev. Wayne Myers from the First Presbyterian Church (the Pink Church) of Pompano Beach; and Rev. Robert Schaefer from St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Pompano Beach.

Also taking part were Catholic priests from surrounding parishes: Father Gerald Morris from St. Coleman Church in Pompano and Father Michael Greer from Assumption Church in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea.

The theme for the evening was "Unusual Kindness," taken from the Acts of the Apostles (28:2) and a perilous sea journey undertaken by St. Paul. "A boat is also symbolic of the sometimes tempestuous journey Christians make together towards unity," said the cover of the evening's program.

It added that "hospitality is a much needed virtue in our search for Christian unity," and pointed out that, in Paul's account of his journey, "it is through (the islanders') unusual kindness that a divided people were drawn closer together."
