Enroll now in School of Ministry

Registrations are now open for the Archdiocesan School of Ministry class of 2017-2019. The two-year cycle of classes is geared toward faith-filled parishioners who desire a deeper understanding of their faith and to grow in knowledge of the Church and its traditions. The program is open to men and women who already are involved in parish ministry, as well as those who are discerning their role within the community. Classes begin in September and this year will take place at five locations:

Online classes also are offered in English and Spanish, consisting of eight 5-week courses and in-person sharing and talks. Graduates earn a Catholic Studies Certificate, or a Pastoral Ministry Certificate if they wish to be commissioned for a specific ministry.

Registration is open through July 31. Tuition can be paid in 20 installments of $28/person or $51/couple, plus a non-refundable registration fee of $100 or $200, respectively. Retired priests gathering May 1

The next gathering of the retired priests of the Archdiocese of Miami will take place Monday, May 1, 11:30 a.m. at St. Matthew Church, 542 Blue Heron Drive, Hallandale Beach. A representative from Catholic Health Services will give a short presentation, which will be followed by lunch. Planned giving seminar for professionals

ThePlanned Giving Advisory Council of the Archdiocese of Miami will host its 2017 Legacy Planning Summit: Strategies for Professionals, Tuesday, May 2, 7:30-11:30 a.m. at St. Thomas University, 16401 N.W. 37 Ave., Miami Gardens. Presented by MBAF, Certified Public Accountants and Advisors, the seminar will feature Samuel A. Donaldson of the Georgia State University College of Law speaking about “Understanding the Menu of Charitable Giving Strategies.” The summit is open to attorneys, certified public accountants, investment consultants, financial advisors, insurance agents, certified financial planners and fundraising executives. Learn Spanish in three weeks

The Southeast Pastoral Institute (SEPI) once again will offer its Immersion in Spanish Language and Culture program for priests, laity, religious and anyone interested in Hispanic people and ministries. This three-week program, June 4-22, provides the necessary skills for beginners to communicate in Spanish and gain knowledge of the Hispanic environment and daily life situations. Successful for over 30 years, the program has enrolled bishops, priests, deacons, religious and laity who now serve the Church in diverse ministries. Deacon named to world prison group

Deacon Edgardo Farías, archdiocesan director of Detention Ministry, has been named North American representative to the board of the International Commission of Catholic Prison Pastoral Care. The appointment was made at the group’s 14th World Congress in Panama City, Panama, and is effective until 2021. “This is a blessed opportunity for collaboration and connection with the other regions of the worldwide Catholic pastoral care,” Deacon Farías said. He directs a ministry staffed almost entirely by volunteers who visit those detained in a total of 34 county jails, state and federal prisons, and federal immigration facilities. The ministry also reaches out to prisoners’ families. For more information, go to www.detentionministry.org.
