Emily was recently presented with the Daily Points of Light Award by Sister Kathryn Donze, school principal. She was nominated by Joshua Williams, founder of Joshua's Heart Foundation, which works to eliminate poverty and hunger.

"It is always humbling to find people who believe in your cause and are willing to invest their time to help those who are less fortunate," said Williams, who gave Emily the Daily Point of Light Award number 6,385.

Emily has supported the foundation with online sales of her Pieces 4 Hope jewelry. She donates the proceeds to projects by Joshua's Heart Foundation to combat poverty and hunger in South Florida communities.

Points of Light mobilizes people through affiliates in 250 cities. Through partnerships with nonprofits and corporations, Points of Light prompts four million volunteers to donate 30 million hours of service each year.

The concept was started by President George H. W. Bush, who conferred 1,020 Daily Point of Light Awards on individuals and organizations alike. Daily Point of Light Awards are given five days a week in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Joshua's Heart Foundation was founded in 2005 in Miami to fight against global hunger and poverty. The 501(c)3 nonprofit organization provides necessities to the needy like groceries and personal items.

"We hope Emily will be a shining example of what alumni and present students should be," said Sister Kathryn in presenting the award.
