MHOC students receive national achievement award

PARKLAND | Ashley James and Chloe Fandino, eighth-grade students at Mary Help of Christians Catholic School, have been honored with the National Junior Honor Society Outstanding Achievement Award. Nationwide, only 500 students are chosen for this award.

The two were picked for their excellence in five areas: scholarship, service, leadership, character and citizenship.

Chloe joined MHOC in sixth grade and has achieved either first-place honors or principal’s honors each quarter since then. She has participated in the school's volleyball team, KIND Club, math team, stagecraft and production, Book Club, Science Olympiad and National Junior Honor Society.

Chloe has won or placed in many academic competitions such as the Broward County Science Fair, Brain Brawl, Mega-Million Word Reader, Mathletics, Catholic Math League Merit Award, and the volleyball team's Most Valuable Player. She volunteers at Vacation Bible School, School Summer Camp, Helping Hands, Easter Egg Hunt, and the Women’s Book Club Sale.

Outside of school, Chloe enjoys volleyball, reading, chemistry, music and musical theater. Her favorite subjects are Science and Math.

The other awardee student, Ashley James, has been at Mary Help of Christians since preschool. She has attained either first place honors or Principal’s Honors each quarter since sixth grade.

Her areas of participation have included robotics, track and field, cheerleading, drama, choir, math team, Science Olympiad, music ministry, Student Council and National Junior Honor Society.

In academic competition, Ashley has won or placed in Brain Brawl, Academic Olympics, St. Thomas Math Competition, National Youth Leadership Nominee, Mega-Million Word Reader (AR Program), Mathletics, and Science Olympiad.

Ashley has served with the school's Student Council and on the executive board for the National Junior Honor Society. She has volunteered as an altar server, dance teacher assistant and summer camp counselor. she has also taken part in backpack drives and faith formation.

Outside of school, Ashley has danced at games for the Miami Dolphins and Miami Heat, as well as a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. She enjoys swimming, piano and ukulele.
