St. Thomas University re-opens; classes resume Thursday

MIAMI GARDENS | St. Thomas University’s campus will reopen for business on Wednesday, September 4. Classes will resume  on Thursday, September 5. The campus did not sustain any weather-related damage and is fully operational.

As of Aug. 30, 2019:

Archbishop: Masses to be held as usual this weekend

MIAMI | As Hurricane Dorian approaches the state of Florida, Archbishop Thomas Wenski sent the following message to priests throughout the Archdiocese of Miami.

“Masses this weekend should be held in parishes as scheduled as the storm is not forecast to affect the Florida coastline until late Monday or early Tuesday. Chancery, parish offices, schools, etc. will be closed on Tuesday as weather conditions are predicted to be hazardous for travel. Whether we reopen on Wednesday will depend on factors still unknown: whether the storm has left the area, whether the streets are passable and whether there is electric power, etc.

“Schools will be closed on Tuesday. Our Catholic schools will follow the public schools in our respective counties as to when schools will reopen.

“Be safe; urge your people to be calm and not to venture out into dangerous conditions unnecessarily.  Considering the projected path of the storm, the prudent option for most will be to shelter in place unless in an area under a mandatory evacuation order.

Oremus pro invicem: O Heavenly Father, all the elements of nature obey Your commands, including hurricanes. Calm the storms that threaten us and turn our fear of Your power into praise of Your goodness. Grant this through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,who lives and reigns with the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.

St. Thomas U. campus closing Friday afternoon

MIAMI GARDENS | St. Thomas University will close its libraries (main and law) and classes will be canceled Friday, Aug. 30, from 4:30 p.m. through Wednesday, Sept. 4. The residence halls will be evacuated by Saturday, Aug. 31, at 9 a.m. Depending on post-hurricane conditions, the university plans on reopening Thursday, Sept. 5; however, the university administration will be closely monitoring the situation and will issue regular status updates.

Catholic cemeteries closing Sunday through Tuesday

Visitors are asked to call before attempting to visit once the storm has passed. Please check the cemetery website and Facebook for updates after the storm.
