Lourdes Academy honors first ever recipients of Legacy of Lourdes Award

MIAMI| Our Lady of Lourdes Academy announces the recipients of its first-ever Legacy of Lourdes Awards. These award recognize seven distinguished faculty and staff members for their decades of service and unwavering dedication to the school’s mission. The awards were presented during the school’s annual Alumnae Mass on October 6, 2025.

“The Legacy of Lourdes Awards is a reflection of the heart of our school,” said Sister Carmen Fernández, a Servant of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and president of Our Lady of Lourdes Academy. “These honorees have not only shaped minds but also nurtured spirits, forming generations of young women who carry the values of Lourdes into the world. Their dedication reminds us of that education, when rooted in faith and love, leaves an imprint that lasts a lifetime,” she added.

In its inaugural year, the Legacy of Lourdes Awards recognize faculty and staff members who have dedicated 30 or more years of faithful service to the school. More than 1,000 alumnae participated in the voting process this September — a testament to the enduring impact and deep affection these educators have inspired across generations.

In celebration, the Lourdes community came together to honor seven extraordinary members of the school family who have helped shape the unique sisterhood that defines Our Lady of Lourdes Academy and whose influence continues to shine through the thousands of students they have taught, mentored, and inspired.

The inaugural 2025 honorees are Silvia Bravo Camaraza,  Ana Chao,  Susan Fleming, Donna McCullough, Carolina Ramirez, Veronica “Vicky” Recio ’73, and Pedro Vázquez. The following are brief bios on each recipient:

Silvia Bravo Camaraza began serving Lourdes Academy in 1966, devoting 44 years to advancing the school’s mission and community. She taught Spanish, chaired the department, served as assistant principal, and moderated the Alumnae Association. She led countless initiatives that strengthened the bonds of sisterhood at Lourdes and her leadership extended beyond the classroom.

She spearheaded fundraising efforts that raised more than $11 million, expanded financial aid opportunities and oversaw major campus improvements, including the renovation of the science labs, the library walkway and the addition of an elevator to ensure ADA accessibility for people with disabilities.

Bravo Camaraza also played a key role in securing property for the Sisters Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) and launched the Educational Pledge Program, an initiative later adopted by other schools. Through her vision, Lourdes Academy gained the support of the Goizueta Foundation, which funded technology upgrades, a strategic plan and scholarships for Hispanic girls from underserved backgrounds. In 2002, she co-founded the IHM Companions in Prayer and Ministry, further strengthening the school’s bond with the IHM Sisters. Though she is no longer with us, her spirit lives on in the lives of her "muchachitas," in the traditions she built, and in the strength of this school.
