St. Helen Church marks 50th

St. Helen Parish in Fort Lauderdale will mark its 50th anniversary with a series of events the weekend of Oct. 12-14. On Friday, Oct. 12, Mass will be celebrated at 6 p.m., followed by dinner. On Saturday, Oct. 13, the church will host a candlelight procession at 7 p.m. On Sunday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m., the golden anniversary Mass will be celebrated. St. Helen is located at 3033 N.W. 33 Ave., Fort Lauderdale. For information call 954-731-7314.

Grief support camp for kids

Children ages 6 to 17 who are grieving the death of a significant person in their lives are invited to Camp Erin Grief Support Camp, Oct. 19-21 at Camp Owaissa Bauer in Homestead. Participation in Camp Erin is free and the weekend includes lodging, meals, transportation, and comfort gifts. This non-denominational camp integrates traditional camp activities with grief education and emotional support. Register now for catechetical conference

The Office of Catechesis will host the 40th annual Catechetical Conference Saturday, Nov. 3, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Archbishop Edward McCarthy High, 5451 s. Flamingo Road, Southwest Ranches. This conference is recommended for all teachers and catechists in the Archdiocese of Miami, as well as anyone interested in learning more about the Catholic faith. This year’s theme is “Building a Culture of Encounter.”

Keynote speakers will be Father Frank DeSiano in English and Bishop Nelson Perez of Cleveland in Spanish. There will be two panel discussions on “Spirit-Filled Catechesis,” featuring Ingrid Delgado of the Florida Catholic Conference, Bishop Perez and Father Tony Ricard in English; and Sister Hilda Mateo, Father Alejandro Cardinale and Marcelo Murua in Spanish. Other speakers include Lawrence Sutton (who will speak on teaching children with autism), Marcelino D’Ambrosio, and Martin Madar as well as local pastors Msgr. Chanel Jeanty and Msgr. Michael Souckar.

Reminder: 60th anniversary events

Archbishop Thomas Wenski is inviting all of South Florida’s Catholics to join him in celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Archdiocese of Miami, which was founded Oct. 7, 1958. Following is a listing of planned Diamond Jubilee Year events:

  • Dress down day and 60th anniversary presentation: Friday, Oct. 5: all archdiocesan schools.
  • Indult Masses for the feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary: Weekend of Oct. 6-7 in all parishes (Office of Worship): An indult is a temporary or personal favor granted by the competent ecclesiastical authority for the good of his local Church. In this case, Archbishop Wenski has given permission to celebrate the Mass for Our Lady of the Holy Rosary rather than the Solemnity of the Lord's Day (27th Sunday in Ordinary time).
  • Solemn vespers and conferral of diocesan honors: Sunday, Oct. 7, 5 p.m. at St. Mary Cathedral, 7527 N.W. Second Ave., Miami.
  • A White Gala to Honor the White Collar: Saturday, Oct. 20: 6 p.m., outfield of Marlins Park. Proceeds benefit Florida seminaries. Purchase tickets, and buy tribute ads honoring archdiocesan priests, at: http://www.adomdevelopment.org/.
  • 60th Anniversary Picnic: Sunday, Oct. 28: 11:30 a.m. Mass, 12:30-5 p.m. picnic; on the grounds of Nativity Church, 5220 Johnson St., Hollywood.

‘Great things’ conference aimed at middle schoolers

The Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry is calling all middle school students to “Great Things: The Archdiocese of Miami Middle School Conference,” to be held Saturday, Oct. 13, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at St. Thomas University, 16401 N.W. 37 Ave., Miami Gardens, in the Fernandez Family Center. The conference will feature keynote speakers, music, breakout sessions, lunch and dinner, Mass and the opportunity for confessions. Cost is $40. For information, contact [email protected].
