Archbishop Wenski to celebrate anti-racism Mass this weekend

MIAMI | Archbishop Thomas Wenski will be the main celebrant at a "Mass for Unity Against Racism," planned for 9 a.m. this coming Sunday, July 5, at Holy Redeemer Church, 1301 NW 71st St.

The July 4 weekend was chosen purposely for the occasion, Archbishop Wenski said. He linked the theme of liberty with the Church's stance against "the sin of racism."

Freedom and human values also call for dealing with the "triple crisis" facing the world, he added in a letter to the archdiocese's priests: the global pandemic, a worldwide economic downturn, and societal unrest.

"America is at its strongest when all our institutions promote the common good and work for the advantage of everyone," he said.

"Unity Against Racism" Masses are scheduled for all parishes throughout the archdiocese. Holy Redeemer will livestream the Mass with Archbishop Wenski as well.

"Independence Day weekend is a graced opportunity for every parish to highlight the Church’s social doctrine," the archbishop said.

Thank you Archbishop for such a positive move. However it grieve me to see the negative comments of my brothers and Sisters we are all God's children.Maybe you have never experienced the ugly demon of racism but I have raised 4 black sons and have had very bad experiences. My CPA son had handcuffs placed on him and thrown against wall all because he picked up his own wallet that had fallen on the ground as he headed for his ID to enter a club. His brother begged him not to say anything because he was afraid he could lose his life. They didn't listen to him never even looked in the wallet to identify him. Called for back up When they finally looked in the wallet they remove the handcuff gave him his wallet and walk away. All my boys who are well respected citizens have had this . Everyday I pray for their safe return to their families . I pray for all my neices nephews and friends kids. So if we haven't walked in the other persons shoes don't condemn.I am so appalled at the previous comments . Again Archbishop I pray that our Heavenly Father continue to bless you.

The Catholic Church should be a beacon of light - she should protect all and be the premiere voice of reason and morality to inform the world and steer it towards the good. The mass, the highest form of prayer, should not be subsumed into an "activist" frame. What IS an anti-racism mass? If the mass this weekend is an anti-racism mass, are the others pro-racism? Do you see what absurdities you open the church up to? The mass, the highest form of prayer, the ultimate catholic act is, by definition, against racism. Likewise, it is, by definition, against abortion, against sodomy, against usury, against worker exploitation -- because it is against sin. We don't need "anti-sodomy" masses. We don't need "anti-abortion" masses. And we don't need "anti-racism" masses. The mass is already the ultimate act against sin. The greatest act of activism the world will ever experience and through the mystery we enter into that act through every mass. This naked pandering or capitulation to pressure, whatever it is that has caused this, is embarrassing! It cheapens it all. Please stop.

Wonderful! Now when are we going to celebrate a mass on the “sin of sodomy.” You know one of the four sins that cry out to heaven for vengeance, the one that is sweeping through this country and the world like wildfire. You know the one that was strengthened just last week by the Supreme Court. Please let me know so I can be one of the first ones to sign up!

I’m going to church to hear the Word of God and Praise him, not to get lecture on racism.
