SOUTHWEST RANCHES - The Lady Mavericks, Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School's girls' varsity soccer team, dedicated their Dec. 16 game against the South Florida Heat to McCarthy soccer mom Debbie Williams and raised funds to benefit the Sarcoma Foundation. Williams, who has sarcoma, was on hand to cheer on her daughter, Britney, and the rest of the team to a 5-0 victory.

"Over the course of a few weeks, the girls sold plastic bracelets imprinted with 'Mavericks Kick Sarcoma,'" said Mike Sica, coach of the Lady Mavericks.

The Lady Mavericks also requested donations from family, friends, classmates, and the McCarthy faculty; family members of the Lady Mavericks sold snacks at the game and held a fundraising raffle as well.

The Mavericks boys' varsity soccer team and the Weston F.C. U12 Girls Nike team also helped by selling bracelets and raffle tickets.

"By the end of the night, the grand total raised by the Lady Maverick family was $7,200," said Sica.

In addition to the money raised at the Dec. 16 game, the Lady Mavericks also participated in the Sarcoma Walk in October, in which they recruited the largest team and raised more than $5,000. The grand total that the Lady Mavericks raised this season for the Sarcoma Foundation was more than $12,000. The Lady Mavericks will present a check to the Sarcoma Foundation in late January.
