Recover the custom of blessings at meals

December 12, 2019

227. One expression of this attitude is when we stop and give thanks to God before and after meals. I ask all believers to return to this beautiful and meaningful custom. That moment of blessing, however brief, reminds us of our dependence on God for life; it strengthens our feeling of gratitude for the gifts of creation; it acknowledges those who by their labors provide us with these goods; and it reaffirms our solidarity with those in greatest need.

St. Andrew Church

Blessed Virgin Mary and Advent

Dear Parishioners of Saint Andrew:

Like me, I presume that you already have your preparations for Christmas well underway. Our seminarian Roger Goodwill helped me to put up the Christmas lights at the rectory last weekend and our tree arrived this week. On Saturday morning, members of the Men’s Club put up the Christmas decorations on the church property and another crew of volunteers spread mulch to beautify the property. I thank all those who have and will help us at Saint Andrew Parish to be well prepared for Christmas.

All these external preparations should express an internal readiness to welcome Christ the Lord. Like the Blessed Virgin Mary whom God kept free from original sin so as to be a worthy mother of the Son of God, we, too, should be free of personal sin so that Christ might dwell within us individually and among us as his holy people. Although distinct from Lent, Advent also is a penitential season; hence the violet vestments at Mass and the three violet candles on the Advent Wreath. In her love and wisdom, the Church calls all of us to use wisely the season of Advent by humbly acknowledging our sins, repenting with a sincere heart, and experiencing the mercy of the Lord in the Sacrament of Penance (also known as Confession or Reconciliation). As Saint John the Baptist said at Christ’s first coming, we must prepare the way of the Lord by making straight his paths. The crooked ways of sin lead us astray from God. We cannot save ourselves. In his infinite mercy, God took the initiative to come to us in his Son Jesus Christ and by the mystery of his life, death, resurrection and ascension, Jesus opened the way to eternal life for us who believe in him. God is always ready (and willing) to forgive the repentant sinner. Now, it is up to us to take the initiative and accept the invitation of the Lord to be reconciled to Him and one another through the Sacrament of Penance. In addition to the usual days and times of Confession, there will be a Penitential Service on Wednesday, December 18th beginning at 7:30 pm in the church. Following a reflection on the Word of God, there will be individual Confessions with several visiting priests, in addition to the priests of the parish. I encourage you to experience the gift of the Lord’s mercy in the Sacrament of Penance as part of your preparations for Christmas.

I also take this opportunity to invite you, your family and your guests to attend the annual “Lessons and Carols” which will take place on Friday, December 20th beginning at 7:30 pm in the church. Our six parish choirs: the Adult English choir, two Spanish choirs, the Youth choir, the Children’s choir, and the Hand-bell choir, will all participate in this special event with Scripture readings and Christmas hymns. A light reception will follow in the porte-cochère.

Finally, I invite you to prepare for Christmas by inviting someone to Mass who is not presently active in the faith. As part of our Golden Jubilee Year, I urge every parishioner to extend a personal invitation to a family member, co-worker, neighbor or friend to become part of our parish community. So many people are just waiting to be invited (back) to the Church. As God took the initiative to bring us back to Himself through Jesus, so may we be the Lord’s instruments to invite others to be part of the wonderful community of Saint Andrew Parish.

May the Lord continue to bless you and your families with His love!
