Obituaries - March 2024

Father Arnaldo Bazán, 89, who served in the Archdiocese of Miami for about 18 years, died March 11, 2024, in the Dominican Republic. He was ordained July 13, 1958, and was the last living priest among the 136 who were expelled by Fidel Castro from Cuba aboard the Covadonga in 1961. While living here, he served at St. Agatha, St. Brendan, St. Michael, San Lazaro, Little Flower (Coral Gables), St. Joseph and Sts. Peter and Paul. 

Augustinian Father James McDougall, 91, who served at St. Thomas University from 1969 to 2015 as chaplain, assistant professor of history and theology, tennis coach and director of Campus Ministry. Even after his retirement, he remained involved with student life and continued to celebrate daily Mass on campus. He died March 9, 2024, at St. Thomas of Villanova Monastery in Pennsylvania. He joined the Augustinians after graduating high school in 1950 and was ordained a priest in June 1959. Funeral services were held at St. Thomas of Villanova Church on the campus of Villanova University March 15, followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery, Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. 

Army Lt. Paterno Medina, 97, father of Father Jesus ‘Jets’ Medina, pastor of St. Peter in Big Pine Key, died March 3, 2024, in the Philippines. Condolences may be sent c/o the parish, 31300 Overseas Highway, Big Pine Key, FL 33043.

Estrella Corces (Lopez), 89, mother of Father Pedro Corces, parochial vicar at Our Lady of Divine Providence in Miami, died March 1, 2024. Condolences may be sent c/o the parish, 10205 West Flagler St., Miami, FL 33174.
