Belen names eight Silver Knight nominees

MIAMI | Belen Jesuit Prep has announced its nominees for the 2018 Miami Herald Silver Knight Awards, one of the nation’s most highly regarded student award programs now in its 59th year.

The purpose of the program is to recognize extraordinary students, in both Miami-Dade and Broward counties, who not only have excelled in the classroom but also have contributed, unselfishly, to their community and/or society as a whole.

“The Belen community is extremely proud to nominate these eight young men for the Silver Knight Award,” said Principal Jose E. Roca. “These seniors’ academic excellence and passion for community service are an example for all to follow.” 

One Silver Knight and three Honorable Mentions will be selected in each category by a panel of independent judges who will interview each nominee at Jungle Island on Tuesday, April 24. The names of the winners will be announced at the Silver Knight Awards ceremony on Thursday, May 17, at the James L. Knight Center in Miami. Winners receive $2,000, a Silver Knight statue and a medallion. The three Honorable Mentions each receive $500 and an engraved plaque.

  • General Scholarship – Andres Dones
  • Journalism – Robert Lopez-Irizarry
  • Music and Dance – Placido Valdes
  • Science – Ivan Barral
  • Social Science – Thomas Gallinar
  • Speech – Javier Guerrero Vicente
  • Vocational Technical – Angel Aguilar
