World Cup fever: priests vs. seminarians

Photographer:

Archdiocesan seminarians from all three Florida seminaries — St. John Vianney in Miami, St. Vincent de Paul in Boynton Beach and Redemptoris Mater in Hialeah — will compete on the soccer field with Miami priests in a fun echo of the recent World Cup.

The game will take place Friday, Feb. 3, at 7:30 p.m. on the field of St. Thomas University, 16401 N.W. 37 Ave., Miami Gardens.

Nineteen seminarians and 18 priests have been identified as players. Three coaches of archdiocesan high school soccer teams will coach the game of 40-minute halves. St. Thomas University students will serve as referees. Elementary school cheerleaders will lead the crowd in cheers for their favorite team.

Father Manny Alvarez, pastor of Little Flower Church in Coral Gables and famous sport fan, will provide the commentary. He will be joined by Ana Rodriguez-Soto, editor of the Florida Catholic and former Optimist Club girls soccer coach.

Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission is free but donations to the Seminary Burse Fund are welcome. More information at [email protected].
