History

A sign announcing the site of a “future” Catholic church stood at the intersection of University Drive and N.W. 61 street in the early 1970s. The Miami Archdiocese had purchased more than 10-acres at this site years before in anticipation of the burgeoning development west of Fort Lauderdale. Other than the name “Saint Malachy,” an announcement that a parish was to be formed, intact boundaries, and a pastor, the parish celebrated Mass initially in a storefront at the Village Mini Mall and at the Margate Fire House. As attendance grew, Mass was celebrated at the Behring Plant cafeteria in 1972. Despite appreciation for the worship spaces, parishioners yearned for church and took steps to achieve that dream and another for a school.

The parish opened a school in 1984 with 90 students from kindergarten through fourth grade, and the school graduated its first 8th grade class in June 1989, the same year pastor Father Dominick O’Dwyer initiated plans to renovate and extend the church building. The annual festival supports music concerts, the school, youth activities, and other outreach.

Nan kòmansman ane 1970 yo yon pankat ki teanonse konstriksyon yon legliz Katolik te kanpe kote University Drive kontre avèk ri 61 N.W. la. Achidyosèz Miyami te achte pi plis pase 10 karo tè nan zòn sa-a kèk ane avan pase yo te deja wè zòn lwès Fort Lauderdale la ta pral devlope. Legliz la te dejà gen non “St. Malachy”, li te gen anons konstriksyon-an, li te gen lizyè, li te genyen yon pastè ki te responsab li, men lamès yo se nan antre yon magazen nan ti sant komèsyal vilaj la osinon nan kay ponpye nan Margate la yo te konn chante. Kòm plis fi dèl te kòmanse vini, yo ale chante lamès yo nan kafeterya Behring Plant an 1972.

Pawas la louvri yon lekòl en 1984 ak 90 elèv soti lekòl matènèl rive moyen I. Premye klas senkyème segondè-a gradye nan lekòl la nan mwa Jyen 1989, nan menm ane sa-a pastè a, Pè Dominick O’Dwyer kòmanse fè plan pou repare e agrandi batiman legliz la. Festival yo fè chak ane sipòte kèk konsè mizik, lekòl la, aktivite jèn yo, ak kèk lòt sèvis pou kominotea.
