MIAMI | Although they were off on President's Day, the third graders at Sts. Peter and Paul School learned a number of lessons timed to coincide with the February holiday.
Under the guidance of their teacher, Jeanette Walled, the students researched the life and accomplishments of their favorite U.S. president. And they presented their research to the class wearing the clothes that particular president would have worn.
The lesson encompassed more than social studies. Walled integrated language arts - the reports; mathematics - figuring out the length of their term in office and the difference in years to date; and religion - since civic duties and responsibilities were correlated to Christian values. The activity culminated with a Mass Feb. 24.
"It was important for the students to learn how our democratic process works and how the citizens have the right and the obligation to choose their presidents," Walled explained.
