PITTSBURG | Funeral services were held earlier this month for Sister Barbara Mary Marshall, a Pittsburgh Sister of Mercy for 62 years who taught at St. Thomas the Apostle School in South Miami for six of those years. She died at the Convent of Mercy Nov. 9.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., she was 79 years old. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1955 and made final vows in 1961.Sister Barbara Mary earned a Bachelor of Science in education from Mount Mercy College (now Carlow University) and a Master of Elementary Education degree from Duquesne University. She was also licensed as a personal care home administrator.

After teaching in several Pittsburg area Catholic schools, she spent six years at St. Thomas the Apostle School. She then served as administrator for Family Service Corp, Inc. before assuming responsibilities for day to day operations of the Motherhouse in Oakland, a position she held until 2008.

Sister Patricia McCann, a personal friend, described Sister Barbara Mary as “one of the gentlest persons I’ve ever known. In every situation, her priority was always the people involved. I remember one time when she was serving as administrator of a residence for the elderly. She had the home purchase a big, old limo bus from an undertaker, and then learned to drive it so she could take the elderly residents out for lunch or day trips.”

A funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 13 in the Chapel at the Convent of Mercy, followed by interment in St. Xavier Cemetery, Latrobe. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, 3333 Fifth Ave., Pittsburgh, Pa. 15213, or Carlow University Scholarship Fund.
