MIAMI | The baseball teams from Archbishop Edward McCarthy and Archbishop Coleman Carroll high schools crowned themselves regional champions and are now vying for state championships in their respective divisions.

McCarthy High's Mavericks will be defending their back-to-back state championships when they play in the 6A State Semifinal game in Ft. Myers Thursday, June 1. Should they win that game, they will play for the championship Saturday, June 3. This is the eighth time in nine years that the Mavericks advance to the state finals.

Carroll's Bulldogs beat Highlands Christian 6-5 to claim the 3A Regional Championship. They will play the 3A semifinal game Friday, May 26, against University Christian and, if they win, play for the championship Saturday, May 27.

The 27-2 Mavericks advanced to the state finals with a dominating pitching performance by senior ace Daniel Federman, who shutdown one of the most powerful and potent offenses in the state, Eau Gallie High School (25-4) by a score of 3-0. "Fed" pitched a complete game shut-out, striking out 11 of the Commodores and walking none. Adan Fernandez led the offense by providing the big hit of the game, a 2-out RBI double after Alex Toral worked a walk. The Maverick defense was stellar, stealing outs during crucial times throughout this exciting game.

The semifinal and championship games will be played in Hammond Stadium, spring training home of the Minnesota Twins.
