MIAMI | Father John Thompson, a Marianist priest who served at Chaminade-Madonna College Prep in Hollywood for 12 years, is marking his 25th anniversary in the priesthood.

Born Oct. 19, 1962 in Brooklyn, New York, Father Thompson made his first vows in the Society of Mary Aug. 15, 1992 in Sykesville, Maryland. He was ordained Sept. 16, 1999, in Sykesville.

His first assignment was as director of campus ministry and high school theology teacher at Chaminade-Madonna, from 1992 through 1996. He returned after ordination, serving as chaplain and president of the school from 2000 through 2008.

Having earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Binghamton University and a certificate in liturgical studies from the University of Notre Dame, Father Thompson left Chaminade-Madonna to pursue a master of divinity degree at the Franciscan School of Theology in Berkeley. He also obtained a doctoral degree in educational leadership at the University of San Francisco.

From 2011 to 2014, Father Thompson served as an assistant professor at Chaminade University in Honolulu. He left the U.S. in 2015 to serve as provincial councilor and sector coordinator for the Sector of Mexico in Queretaro, Mexico, where he resides and continues to serve today.

“I was drawn to the Marianists because of the family aspect of the charism that entailed service with sisters, brothers, priests and laity,” Father Thompson said. “I am grateful for the personal, professional, academic and spiritual formation and support I have received over these past years. I have been given a gift, and I hope that I use this gift in service to Mary’s mission, to bring Christ to the world and to companion with others in building up the reign of God.”
