WASHINGTON | Bishop Joseph Tyson, chairman of the U.S. bishops' Subcommittee on the Catholic Communications Campaign, has thanked Archbishop Thomas Wenski and Catholics in the Archdiocese of Miami for their contribution of $45,896.96 to last year's annual collection.
The Catholic Communications Campaign will be taken up this weekend, May 27-28, in most South Florida parishes. The funds "help spread the Gospel at home and abroad."
Half of the funds collected remain with each diocese for local communications projects, such as televising the weekly Mass for shut-ins. The other half is distributed by the bishops' subcommittee to communications projects nationwide. For example, the collection provided seed funding and continued support for the For Your Marriage website, the audio podcasts of the daily scripture readings, and the Catholic Church App.
In his 2017 message for the World Communications Day, Pope Francis said: "I would like to encourage everyone to engage in constructive forms of communication that reject prejudice towards others and foster a culture of encounter, helping all of us to view the world around us with realism and trust."
