HIALEAH | Immaculate Conception School's WICS Celtic News has received state and national accolades from the Florida Scholastic Press Association and the Journalism Educational Association.

In April, the WICS Celtic News won six awards from the Florida Scholastic Press Association, including "All-Florida" for their show opening, "Best of the Best" for Photo Story, and "Top Middle School News Anchor" for Maximus Ganem.

On May 10, the media team received two national awards from the Journalism Educational Association. The honors included Superior Broadcast Package - Feature Story, and Superior Broadcast Package - Sports. Both are the highest-rated awards in each category. Awards and medals were presented to Alyssa Barcelo, Catherine Collazo, Enrique de la Osa, and Maximus Ganum.

Part of the success of the program dates back to the summer of 2016, when the TV media lab at Immaculate underwent a complete overhaul, adding new HD cameras, a TelePrompTer for reading the news, and a TriCaster to produce the news.

"What these kids have done in the past two years is nothing short of extraordinary," said Father Manny Alvarez, Immaculate’s pastor. "Even before they had the new equipment, they were out last year covering the presidential primary here in Florida and even interviewed Sen. Marco Rubio at a local rally. They are naturals in front and behind the camera."

The Immaculate Conception media team also received guidance from Christopher Columbus High School’s award winning media team during a summer camp that would not only garner them awards but prepare them for high school and beyond.

"The middle school in South Florida that has shown time and time again to be hands down the best, whether in public or private school, is Immaculate,” said Omar Delgado, Columbus’ media advisor. “They have state-of-the-art equipment and have a willingness and desire to learn and become great at broadcast journalism."

Father Alvarez praised Tania Busto, Immaculate’s media advisor, as well as the Columbus media team: "They've won multiple national championships in media over at Columbus, and we wanted our students to learn from the best. Couldn't be prouder of our kids."
