CORAL GABLES | Competition was sizzling Jan. 20 at the annual Gables Chili Fest and Cook-Off organized by the Coral Gables Knights of Columbus to benefit local veterans.

Despite a stormy morning, 14 teams set up tents in the rain to prepare their best chili recipes and vie for the Best Chili awards. The weather cleared by noon and hundreds of visitors turned out to enjoy the chili and a fun, family afternoon.

Best Chili prizes were awarded in two categories: “The People's Choice,” based on ballots from the visitors, and “The Judge's Choice,” a vote by a panel of prominent food judges. Winners in the People's Choice category were:

  • First place: Down Syndrome Association of Miami;
  • Second place: Church of the Little Flower Men's Emmaus;
  • Third place: St. Augustine Young Adults Group.

Winners in the Judge’s Choice category were:

  • First place: Fetes & Events;
  • Second place: St. Agatha Hope for Homeless Ministry;
  • Third place: Down Syndrome Association of Miami.

The People’s Choice awards were based on over 200 ballots submitted by attendees who sampled the chili dishes at the event. The Judge’s Choice awards were determined by a blind tasting of the chili dishes prepared by all 14 teams. The three-judge panel consisted of: Chef Jorge Alvarez of the Stuffed Cuban; Charlie Colon, executive chef of Celebrity Caterers; and Roí Correa, CEO, FIBEGA, the International Gastronomy Tourism Fair.

Notable sponsors for the Knights of Columbus Gables Chili Fest charity this year were Jack Daniels and the Nightlife Brewing Company.

“The uniqueness of our event was that we had the combined participation of civic, business, religious and charity organizations coming together under one umbrella in support of our local veterans,” said Coral Gables Grand Knight Matthew Brophy. “We look forward to making next year’s Chili Fest even better.”
