Archbishop Wenski congratulates new bishop of Pensacola-Tallahassee

Archbishop Thomas Wenski issued the following statement May 29, 2017, upon the appointment of the sixth bishop of the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee.

MIAMI |  Metropolitan Archbishop Thomas Wenski congratulates Holy Cross Father William Wack as Our Holy Father Pope Francis appoints him bishop of the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee, Florida.

Bishop-elect Wack, pastor of St. Ignatious Martyr Catholic Church in Austin, Texas, becomes the sixth bishop to serve the Pensacola-Tallahassee diocese in the Florida Panhandle since its establishment in 1975. The cities of Pensacola and Tallahassee are the two major cities in the diocese which spans two time zones.  The Cathedral and administration of the diocese are located in Pensacola and. due to distance, a co-cathedral is located in Tallahassee, the state capital.

Archbishop Wenski, who served for a year as Apostolic Administrator of Pensacola-Tallahassee when the see was vacated on Bishop John Ricard’s retirement in 2011, welcomed the appointment. 

“Bishop-elect Wack comes to the Panhandle,” Archbishop Wenski said, “with a wealth of pastoral experience and he will find in his new diocese a vibrant Church, with a young and zealous clergy and committed Catholic faithful. The Church of Pensacola-Tallahassee is in good hands and can continue to look to the future with great hope.”
