His voice quivering with nervousness and emotions, Bishop Enrique Delgado addressed the congregation at his ordination Mass with these words, switching as needed from English to Spanish:

“My dear brothers and sisters, it’s a great honor for me to be here today as a newly ordained bishop by the grace of God. I want to give thanks to the Holy Father, Pope Francis, for entrusting me the office of bishop. And I would like also to thank you, [Archbishop Christophe] Pierre and Archbishop [Thomas] Wenski.

“I want to thank my brother bishops, too, and all my brother priests of the Archdiocese of Miami, and all the brother priests that have come today to celebrate with me this ordination that is for the glory of God and for the greater [good] of the Church. Because my episcopacy will be of service: to the Lord, to the Church, to the people of God.

“I want to thank you, my family, too, who have come here to join me on this great day for myself. I want to thank my parents. My mother who is watching me in heaven, and my father who is watching me in the internet.

“For my father, who is watching me at this moment, greetings from Miami. And to all those who are with him at this moment of joy. I know you wanted to be here, but I know you preferred to stay so that we also could be with you in our hearts.

“I want to thank also all the people, my community, St. Katharine Drexel. And I see today many, many people from St. Justin the Martyr. Thank you for coming. I want to give thanks also for the members of all denominations and the civil authorities. I thank for your presence today here in this celebration.

“In Spanish, I want to tell all my brothers and sisters. I feel truly moved, but I want to dedicate this episcopacy - tomorrow I will celebrate my first Mass on the feast of the Immaculate Conception. And I want to dedicate this episcopacy to the Virgin Mary, that she will protect this episcopacy. And that always, this be at the service of God; of the Church and the people of God. That it be for the glory of God and for the people of God.

Que el Señor nos bendiga. May God bless you always. Thank you.”
