St. Thomas Aquinas students are winners at Science Fair

FORT LAUDERDALE | Six of out the 10 students who represented St. Thomas Aquinas High School at the Broward County Science Fair came away with awards, including three first places and five additional awards.

A total of 193 projects from 20 high schools competed at the fair. Following is the list of St. Thomas winners. The first place winners will go on to compete in the State Science Fair in Lakeland, March 31-April 2.

  • Senior Brandon Wummer won first place in chemistry for his project “Creating a Hydrogen Fuel Cell with Salt Water.” He also won special awards from Officer Snook and from the Water Quality Specialists.
  • Junior Kelly Litts won first place in biochemistry for her project “Bioactive Enzymatic Identification of E. Coli.”
  • Sophomore Lauren Enten won first place in computer science for her project “Epidemiology of Ebola: A Monte Carlo Simulation.” She also won special awards from the U.S. Department of Health and from INTEL.
  • Sophomore Theresa Sandbrook won third place in Environmental Science for her project “The Effect of Boat Paint on Marine Zinc Levels.” She also won special awards from the Association of Women Geoscientists and from the Stockholm Junior Water Prize.
  • Junior Sebastian Escobar won third place in Engineering for his project “Efficiency of Natural Insulators.”
  • Senior Jessica Pokryfke, won fourth place in Medicine and Health for her project on “Natural Teeth Whiteners.”
