FORT LAUDERDALE | Three of the 13 students representing all of Broward County at the Florida State Science Fair came from St. Thomas Aquinas High School, and they represented their school and county with distinction.

The STA participants were: Junior Kelly Litts, senior Brandon Wummer and sophomore Lauren Enten.

  • Lauren won third place in the state for her project "Epidemiology of Ebola:  A Monte Carlo Simulation."
  • Brandon won second place for his project "Electrodialysis Efficiency in Desalination for an Electroytic Fuel Cell."

He and his project will now compete at the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair to be held in Pittsburgh, Pa. May 10-15.

The Intel ISEF is the largest international pre-college science competition in the world. More than 1,700 high school students from over 70 countries compete for more than $5 million in prizes. Only the top projects from regional and state fairs advance to Intel ISEF.

"It is a great accomplishment to advance to the Intel ISEF and we are very proud of Brandon," said Laura Shearer, chairperson of the St. Thomas Aquinas Science Department.
