St. Michael students re-create the Arctic in South Florida

MIAMI | Mixing polar bears and igloos with South Florida's heat is never a good idea. But that's what St. Michael the Archangel's kindergarten students did, quite successfully, as part of a STREAM project.

STREAM stands for Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Art and Math. It's the Catholic extension of STEM projects used to encourage proficience in science, math and engineering. Both STEM and STREAM encourage students to learn by exploration and inquiry.

And that's just what St. Michael's kindergarten class did. They learned facts about animals who live in the Arctic and how they survive. They compared the differences between animals who live in the polar regions and those who live in warmer climates. How are their ears, tails, noses and toes similar or different?

Finally, they built an igloo out of recyclable milk jugs, managing, in a way, to do the impossible: creating a cool environment in a very warm place.
