St. Brendan to host seven days of prayer for peace, conversion of hearts

MIAMI | St. Brendan Church invites the community to join them in seven days of intensive prayer for peace in the world and the conversion of hearts.

Called Jericho, the prayer will begin Monday, Nov. 23 at 6 a.m. and continue through Monday, Nov. 30 at 6 a.m. in St. Brendan’s daily adoration chapel, which is open 24 hours a day seven days a week.

Jericho will feature a scripture reading and reflection every day at 6 a.m., 9 a.m., noon, 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., followed by time for quiet meditation and silent praying of the rosary. Participants also are asked to fast during the seven-day period.

“I follow the hours of Jesus’ passion of the cross. I add sunset at 6 p.m.,” explained Father Fernando Heria, pastor of St. Brendan. “The whole idea is that people, for seven days, they participate in fasting, they participate in prayer.”

The prayers seek the intercession of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary to attain peace in the world and the conversion of hearts, all done in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. The readings are determined beforehand and led by a member of the clergy or laity also selected in advance.

“I invite other priests, laity, so I will have a reader on those specific reading hours,” said Father Heria. A total of 35 will be needed, but “a lot of my ministries are already signing up.”

Those include the parish Legion of Mary, both English and Spanish groups, the members of the Cenacle of Our Lady Guardian of the Faith, an Ecuadorian devotion, the Caballeros Catolicos and Knights of Columbus, Emmaus retreatants, and the Order of Malta.

“If you can come to the church, come please. If you cannot come to mine and you can go to another church, do it. If you’re a shut-in, do it at home,” Father Heria said. “Can you imagine if we have people for seven days in continuous prayer? Holy cow!”

He does not think the Thanksgiving holiday will interfere with people’s prayers. “I have never shut down the adoration chapel through Thanksgiving or Christmas.”

He added that “it would be so nice if some other churches throughout the county and the archdiocese would do the same. I’m hoping that it will catch on.”

St. Brendan is located at 8725 S.W. 32 St., Miami. For information call 305-221-0881.
