MIAMI | Artist Kahlil Gibran said “Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart.” At a glance, the annual Mr. Sabre contest held during Homecoming Week at St. Brendan High School fulfills this philosophy. On Jan. 20, the one night event showcased the talents of 30 boys from grades nine through 12.
The contest started three years ago, and also serves as a fundraiser. The goal is to showcase the male students at St. Brendan High School, as well as their personal and artistic talents. Along with the talent portion, the contest also included an opening act, casualwear, formalwear, and a question and answer portion.
The evening was a sellout, and a full-house anxiously awaited the results. The judges, Arlenee Suarez, Arlene Ceballos-Adams and Iris Sarria, tallied scores and announced the top three contestants. The third place winner was junior Brandon Gonzalez, the runner-up was sophomore Louis Moya, and the winner of the 2016 Mr. Sabre Contest was senior Adrian “AJ” De La Torriente.
The judges praised contestants for their talent, great personalities and desire to entertain the audience.
“The Mr. Sabre pageant is a fun event that I have participated in the last three years,” said Adrian. “Whether I won or lost it was a great time, as I was partaking with some of my closest friends and creating some of my best high school memories.”
