Cuban exile priests meet in Orlando

Accompanied by the image of Our Lady of Charity that was given to Pope Francis last September by a Cuban family, the International Fraternity of Clergy and Religious of Cuba gathered in Orlando at the end of June for their 47th annual meeting.

They listened to presentations regarding the papal encyclicals “Joy of the Gospel” and “Laudato Si'", as well as the apostolic exhortation “Amoris Laetitia.” They also discussed the “positive echoes” as well as the anxieties raised among exiles by Pope Francis’ visit to the island. They congratulated Bishop Juan de la Caridad Garcia on his appointment as the new archbishop of Havana. And they mourned the recent acts of terror and mass killings in Orlando, France and other parts of the world.

Among the Cuban-American bishops present at the meeting were Bishop Felipe Estevez of St. Augustine, Bishop Octavio Cisneros, auxiliary of Brooklyn, and Bishop Fernando Isern, emeritus of Pueblo, Colo.

“Before the God of mercy who always forgives and welcomes us, and at the foot of the Virgin who leads us to her son that we might live as brothers and sisters in love and peace, we commend ourselves to the Cuban people, who are one, to the Cuban Church, to political prisoners, to all the members of our fraternity who have passed away, and to all those who in one way or another discover in the arms of Our Lady of Charity the peace and justice for which they yearn.”

The image of Our Lady of Charity brought by Pope Francis to the U.S. will be housed at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Charity in Miami, from where it will visit other Cuban exile communities throughout the U.S. For information, call the shrine at 305-854-2404.
