Mother Teresa exhibit, Mass on canonization day

Archbishop Thomas Wenski will celebrate Mass at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, in St. Mary Cathedral, in thanksgiving for the canonization that day in Rome of Mother Teresa of Kolkata. That same weekend, the cathedral will host a traveling exhibit on the life of “the saint of the slums.” The exhibit will then move to other churches in the archdiocese. Pastoral Care and Counseling course at STU

St. Thomas University will be offering a course this fall for all those interested in pastoral care, caregiving, and the spirituality and values that sustain this ministry. The course, “Pastoral Care and Counseling,” will be taught by Mary Carter Waren over three weekends: Aug. 27-28, Sept. 23-24, and Nov. 18-19, Friday nights from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For information, email [email protected] or Cynthia Rose at [email protected]. St. Thomas University is located at 16401 N.W. 37 Ave., Miami Gardens.  

Sisters of St. Joseph premiere documentary

All are invited to join the Sisters of St. Joseph in celebrating their 150 years of service in Florida as PBS premieres its documentary on this congregation of religious women, "A Legacy of Faith." The premiere of the PBS documentary will be shown in the outdoor pavilion at Mercy Hospital, 3663 S. Miami Ave., Miami, on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. The hospital was founded by the sisters. No tickets are required for this event and complimentary valet parking will be available. For those unable to attend, WPBT, Channel 2, in Miami, will air the PBS documentary on Sunday, Sept. 25, at 3:30 p.m. and Monday, Sept. 26 at 11 p.m. 

Catechetical leaders invited to Jubilee

Archbishop Thomas Wenski is inviting all the directors and coordinators of catechesis to celebrate with him the Jubilee for Catechesis, “To Contemplate Mercy,” on Friday, Sept. 23, beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Charity (Ermita de la Caridad), 3609 S. Miami Ave., Miami. The celebration will include: procession through the Holy Door; Mass and a group picture with the archbishop; blessing of all catechetical leaders; and a light reception afterward. Detention Ministry delves ‘Beyond Justice to Mercy’

The archdiocesan Detention Ministry invites the community to a day-long conference for the Jubilee of Mercy focusing on the topic “Beyond Justice to Mercy.” The conference will take place Sept. 24 at Corpus Christi Church, 3220 N.W. Seventh Ave., Miami. Archbishop Thomas Wenski will celebrate the opening Mass, Auxiliary Bishop Peter Baldacchino will deliver the opening keynote, and Bishop Lorenzo Leon de Alvarado, emeritus of Huacho, Peru, will deliver the closing keynote.

Topics to be discussed by expert panelists include: Youth in the Justice System and No More Executions. The panelists include Carlos J. Martinez, Miami-Dade Public Defender for the 11th Judicial Circuit Court of Florida, Todd Bass, chief of the Juvenile Division for Miami-Dade Office of the State Attorney; Cathy Burgos, division director of operations for Miami-Dade County Juvenile Services; Ingrid M Delgado, associate for Social Concerns/Respect Life Florida Catholic Conference; Dale Recinella, Catholic chaplain for Florida’s Death Row; Susan Recinella, Catholic lay minister to families of the executed; and George F. Kain, police commissioner and professor of Justice and Law Administration at Western CT State University.

STU offering master’s degree in bioethics

St. Thomas University is launching a new Master's in Bioethics degree, which will provide students with a deep analysis and solutions for some of the most critical issues of our time. Father Alfred Cioffi, assistant professor of Biology and Bioethics at St. Thomas, is the program director. The Miami priest holds a doctorate in genetics from Purdue University and a doctorate in moral theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. The degree will consist of eight courses (two per semester) for a total of 30 credits, beginning this fall. The courses include: Fundamental Principles in Catholic Bioethics, Responsible Research and Professional Conduct, Bioethical Issues at the Beginning of Human Life, Bioethical Issues toward the End of Human Life, Biostatistics, Healthcare Bioethics, Human Population and Environmental Bioethics, and an internship in a specific field of interest. Catechetical Conference set for Oct. 22

On Saturday, Oct. 22, the Office of Catechesis will host its annual Catechetical Conference, for all those who teach religion in archdiocesan parishes and schools. The conference will feature 20 enrichment sessions in English and Spanish led by some of the most prominent scholars in the U.S. Among them: Father Joe Nassal of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood; Jeff Cavins, biblical scholar and founding host of EWTN’s “Life on the Rock”; Maria Covarrubias, director of Catechetical Ministry in the Diocese of San Bernardino; JoAnn Paradise, national catechetical consultant for Our Sunday Visitor; Deacon Larry Oney of the Archdiocese of New Orleans and Hope and Purpose Ministries; and Victor Valenzuela of Sadlier Religion; as well as singer Steve Angrisano. The conference will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Msgr. Edward Pace High School, 15600 N.W. 32 Ave., Miami Gardens.
