FORT LAUDERDALE | Broward County Commissioner Lois Wexler recently recognized Archbishop Edward McCarthy High School for assisting coffee farmers in Haiti.

Students in the school's business department developed the Cafeiere et Cacouyere du Nord'Quest coffee project in partnership with St. Thomas University's Center for Community Engagement. Business students purchase coffee from the farmers, sell it at a profit and give back proceeds from the sales. This year the school donated approximately $4,000.

The donations have helped send children to school in Haiti and paid for a small medical facility. The co-op has greatly impacted the lives of Haitian coffee farmers who have experienced a 600 percent increase in profit.
