SOUTHWEST RANCHES | Eighteen years after breaking ground on their 48-acre site, officials at Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School broke ground for yet another project: a 5,000-square-foot locker room.

The locker room will be a freestanding building, located next to the Student and Performing Arts Center and the Sportsplex Fitness Center. It will incorporate the state-of-the-art in energy efficiency, and include two drop-down screens, team meeting rooms, and shower/locker facilities.

When Father Brendan Dalton, supervising principal, blessed the ground March 19, he included a prayer to St. Joseph, whose feast day it was: “St. Joseph, Patron of the Universal Church, please watch over the Church as carefully as you watched over Jesus, help protect it and guide it as you did with your adopted son, Amen.”

As he concluded the prayer, he pushed the golden shovel into the ground and turned the earth. Afterward, he turned to the school's principal, Richard P. Jean, and the rest of those present - students representing the different sports and student government, the athletic director, head coaches, and the contractor - and said: “This was the perfect day to break ground, the feast day of St. Joseph who looks over all of us, the Patron of the Universal Church. Our college preparatory school continues to grow and thrive academically and athletically.”
