Lakes student places among top 25 in spelling bee

MIAMI LAKES | Last month, fifth grader Rafael de la Cova and eighth grader Karina Sarandrea represented Our Lady of the Lakes School at the 75h annual Miami Herald Spelling Bee.

Of the more than 100 students who represented their schools at the competition, Rafael placed among the top 25, making it past the first round.

Now celebrating its 75th anniversary, the Miami Herald Spelling Bee, presented by Burger King Corp., offers the opportunity for South Florida middle schools to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee program. Last year, more than 375 public and private school students in fourth through eighth grade participated from Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe counties.
