Miami…(November 21, 2014) Haitian Cardinal Chibly Langlois will celebrate his first Mass as cardinal with Miami’s Haitian community this Sunday, Nov. 23, at 9:30 a.m. at Notre Dame d’Haiti, 110 N.E. 62 St., Miami.
Cardinal Langlois, bishop of the Diocese of Les Cayes, Haiti, is the first Haitian bishop to be named a cardinal. At 55, he was also the youngest of those who were elevated to the rank of cardinal by Pope Francis on Jan. 12 of this year, and the only one who was not already an archbishop. He received his “red hat” at the Feb. 22 consistory in the Vatican.
Cardinal Langlois currently serves as president of the Haitian bishops’ conference, a position which frequently brings him to South Florida for meetings of PROCHE — the Partnership for the Reconstruction of the Church in Haiti after the Jan. 12, 2010 earthquake. This Sunday’s Mass, however, is his first formal celebration as cardinal with the Haitians living in South Florida.
Media are welcome to attend. The contact at Notre Dame d’Haiti is Father Reginald Jean-Mary, the church’s pastor: 305-751-6289.
