MIAMI | The caps and gowns are put away and the books are closed on 12 years of school. The Archdiocese of Miami’s high school class of 2016 has penned its entry in the history books. Their legacy?

Here are some numbers, based on information provided to the archdiocesan Department of Schools by 12 of the 13 high schools and 1 ADOM Virtual School:

1 Gates Millennium Scholar

  • Michelle Rios, Archbishop Coleman Carroll High School, Miami

10 Silver Knights and 13 Honorable Mentions

  • 5 winners for St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, 4 for Christopher Columbus High School in Miami, and 1 for St. Brendan High School, Miami.
  • The honorable mentions went to St. Thomas (3), Columbus (2), Cardinal Gibbons (2), and one each to St. Brendan, Belen, Carrollton, Our Lady of Lourdes, Archbishop Coleman Carroll and Archbishop Edward McCarthy 

147 National Merit Scholar awardees

  • Including finalists, semifinalists, commended, Hispanic and special recognition)

10 State championships:

  • 4 for St. Thomas Aquinas in boys’ lacrosse, football and girls’ volleyball;
  • 2 for Archbishop McCarthy in boys’ volleyball and baseball;
  • 2 for Belen in boys’ water polo and boys’ soccer;
  • 1 for Cardinal Gibbons in girls’ volleyball; and
  • 1 for St. Brendan in cheerleading

1 National championship

  • In the National Speech and Debate Association’s Tournament of Champions: Eve Moll, of St. Thomas Aquinas, earned the title for Original Oratory

2 Cappies

  • For Archbishop McCarthy Maverick Players Marisabel Correa, Featured Actress in “The Crucible,” and Bella Miulescu, Supporting Actress in “The Crucible”
