MIAMI | A shipload of generators, temporary sleeping mattresses, solar lights/lanterns and refrigerators is on its way to the Bahamas as part of the Archdiocese of Miami's efforts to assist those hardest hit by Hurricane Matthew.

The items were requested by Archbishop Patrick Pinder of Nassau and purchased by Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Miami. They were loaded onto a ship bound for Nassau Oct. 21.

Best Office Products assembled, packed and transported the items to the freighter without cost to Catholic Charities. The Betty K Line donated all the transportation and shipping costs.

The shipment will be met in Nassau by staff from Catholic Charities of Miami and the Archdiocese of Nassau. Once cleared by Bahamian Customs, the items will be offloaded by staff and distributed to the out-islands. The Archdiocese of Nassau also will begin helping the most vulnerable victims to permanently rebuild and repair their homes.

"The outpouring of financial generosity from the faithful in the Archdiocese of Miami is what makes this all possible and for this we give praise to God," said Deacon Richard Turcotte, chief executive officer of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Miami.
