Aquinas Raiders show off speech, debate skills

Earn several top spots at national competition in California

FORT LAUDERDALE | The weekend of Valentine’s Day, the St. Thomas Aquinas High School Speech and Debate team embarked on an across-the-nation adventure. They competed in the highly regarded University of California-Berkeley 42nd annual Debate Tournament.

Competing along with 2,000 students from 23 states, the STA Raiders made their name known. The team took home four quarterfinalist trophies in speech, a quarterfinalist team trophy in Public Forum Debate, a second place in Dramatic Interpretation, and two championships.

The winners were:

  • John Murphy and Esteban Burgos: DUO Interpretation - Champion
  • Graysen Martinez: Humorous Interpretation - Champion
  • Madeleine Hanlon- Dramatic Interpretation- second place.
