MIAMI | Over 60 speakers, including 32 alumni, visited St. Brendan High School last month to share their expertise about a plethora of professions on Career Day.

Students spent the day listening and learning about day-to-day life as doctors, lawyers, engineers, artists, nurses, journalists, entrepreneurs, firemen, police and service personnel.

Dr. Gladys Giron, an oncologic surgeon at Baptist Breast Center who graduated from St. Brendan in 1988, was among the alumni who came to give back.

“It was such a great experience coming back to St. Brendan High School and answering such insightful questions from the young ladies and gentlemen,”said Giron. “It gives me great pride to see how many positive additions are being made to the school both in expanding the curriculum and campus. I had a wonderful four years and was more than prepared for my college years and beyond. The atmosphere of love, caring and Catholic values has not changed.”

Another alumnus present for Career Day was Robert Becerra, class of 1980. Becerra is a Florida Bar Board Certified Specialist in International Law and spoke about his job as a lawyer, as well as the path he has taken to open his own firm. He noted that he always enjoys coming back to the welcoming, nurturing atmosphere at St. Brendan, and giving back to a school that gave him many great experiences.

Juan Perez, Miami Dade Police director and the parent of a past and present student at St. Brendan, shared his insight into the profession that he cherishes. He spoke to students in the library about his job - to which he was only recently appointed - and then gave students a firsthand glimpse into the numerous units (K-9, Bomb Squad, Special Response Team, helicopter, cars, and motorcycle) of the Miami-Dade Police Department, many of which were present outside on St. Brendan’s fields.

“My hope is that my presentation enlightened the students about the profession and difficulties we face as law enforcement,” said Perez.
