Miami…(January 16, 2019) About 190 pilgrims representing the Archdiocese of Miami will travel to Washington, D.C. on Thursday, Jan. 17 to participate in the March for Life, one of the largest pro-life events in the world. The Miami group consists of students and chaperones from 10 archdiocesan high schools, the University of Miami and Florida International University, the Youth and Young Adult Ministry of the archdiocese, and the Respect Life Ministry of the archdiocese.
On Friday, Jan. 18, the group will join over 100,000 other pilgrims from all over the country for the 46th annual March for Life. A rally with guest speakers, including representatives from Congress, will take place on the National Mall. At 1 p.m. they will march together to the Supreme Court and Capitol Building, even if the government remains shutdown.
Media are welcome to meet with archdiocesan pilgrims for interviews prior to departure from Miami International Airport (MIA) on Thursday, Jan. 17 from 6 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. In D.C., media can contact Rosemarie Banich at 305-202-4923. For post interview opportunities, the groups will return to MIA on Saturday, Jan. 19 from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
About the March for Life
The March for Life in Washington D.C. began as a small demonstration against the decision made on Jan. 22, 1973 by the Supreme Court to invalidate 50 state laws and make abortion legal and available on demand throughout the United States in the Roe v Wade and Doe v Bolton decisions.
In his column for the January 2019 edition of the Florida Catholic, Archbishop of Miami Thomas Wenski called abortion “the silent holocaust of millions of children,“ of which about 60 million have occurred in the U.S. since the Roe v Wade decision, and is the leading cause of death worldwide.
“The hope of pro-lifers that originalist justices will overturn Roe v. Wade will not totally end abortion, but it would return lawmaking to state legislatures which are increasingly pro-life. Our nation is increasingly rejecting abortion and Roe v. Wade as states continue to adopt more limitations on abortion and expand alternatives to abortion,” said Archbishop Wenski.
