MIAMI... (May 18, 2018) Archbishop Thomas Wenski issued the following statement today regarding the tragic shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas:

It is with great sadness I learned of another tragic school shooting, this time at Santa Fe High School, in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. Words fail at these moments, especially as this shooting took place just three months after our own tragedy in Parkland.

I offer my prayers and those of the entire Catholic community for all the people in the Houston area who were affected by this senseless tragedy: We pray for the deceased and wounded, for their families and loved ones, for first responders and for the entire community. Having experienced the pain ourselves in the Archdiocese of Miami, we are reaching out to Cardinal Daniel DiNardo and his staff to offer any help we can.

It is not enough to feel outrage when innocent children are made victims of senseless violence. We must come together as a nation not only to support one another in this time of grief, but also to seek sensible solutions that will prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future. With God’s help, we can remain strong and resolute to resist evil in all its manifestations. May God heal the broken-hearted and comfort the sorrowing.
