Archbishop Wenski introduces new auxiliary bishop for Miami

English Spanish

I am grateful that Pope Francis has thought of Miami to send us a second auxiliary bishop. And in selecting a suitable priest for bishop, he chose from one of our own. Father, now bishop-elect, Enrique Delgado, studied at our seminaries and earned a doctorate from our Archdiocesan University, St. Thomas University, he served in our parishes and is now pastor of St. Katharine Drexel in Weston where he brought to completion the construction of its new church.

His brothers in our presbyterate describe him as “very kindly, devout, fraternal,” “a good man, well liked, very competent.” I have appreciated his hard work at St. Katharine’s – work done always “with the heart of a pastor.” And so, I look forward to his working along with Bishop Baldacchino at my side in assisting me in the care of souls of this dynamic, diverse and vibrant local Church, the Archdiocese of Miami.

Today, of course, is October 12th – the traditional Columbus Day – which in many parts of this hemisphere is referred to as El Día de la Raza which celebrates the cultural diversity and richness of Hispanic America. Bishop-elect Delgado is Peruvian by birth, and his election as bishop also reflects the growing presence of Hispanics in the Catholic Church here in the United States – something that here in South Florida has been obvious for a long time.

Bishop-elect Delgado, congratulations – and thank you for saying yes to the Holy Father’s appointment.

I'm so happy that Pope Francis Chose so wisely sending this great priest to be the auxiliary Bishop for Miami. He will be a great addition to the parish.

Congratulations to Father Enrique Delgado, our Pastor, for having accepted this call from God to serve Him as the new Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Miami. Father Enrique has been instrumental to ensure that we, Catholics, could have a house of prayer. For years we had to get together in God's name in a local school and in a warehouse. Fr Enrique made it happen and built, with the help of the community, the Knights of Columbus local council, and especially the Archdiocese of Miami, a lovely house of prayer. His kindness, his dedication, his loving attitude treating his flock as the Good Pastor would love to, has made him dear and near to our hearts. Not only the American and Hispanic communities are happy for him. The Portuguese-speaking is spreading the joy because we will also have our first mass in Portuguese next Oct 15th in commemoration of the 300 years of Our Lady Aparecida (patroness of Brazil), all a result of Fr. Enrique's efforts to make it a reality. Today, Oct 12th, is also Her day! May God keep blessing his path and his actions, becoming a lighthouse of faith and hope not only for us in Weston, FL but also to all communities served by this Archdiocese. Peace, Orlando PS: Please, be so kind to correct the name of our Parish. It's not "St. Kathryns" but "St. Katharine's".
